After a weekend of nonstop softball action down at Abbotsford's Exhibition Park, one team has been crowned this year's Western Canadian U13 Softball Championship winners.
Despite some strong performances from the Abbotsford Outlaws host team, it was Manitoba's Interlake Phillies who came out on top, taking gold in an all-Manitoba final match.
Throughout the entire four-day tournament, the Phillies never once experienced the bitter taste of defeat, going 7-0 and finishing in first place after back-to-back wins against the Eastman Wildcats in the playoffs.
Once the dust had settled, it was the Phillies who took gold, followed by the Wildcats with silver, and the Calgary Kaizen with bronze.
Despite the Outlaws not being able to find a podium spot in this tournament, Abbotsford Minor Fastball Association president Tom Eaton said the organization was still very happy with how this season went for the promising U13 squad.
"We are incredibly proud of this remarkable group," Eaton said.
The Outlaws began the tournament on a strong note, beating the Langford Lightning 17-11 in the opening match on Thursday. Unfortunately, this ended up being the only win for the group, with none of the three B.C. teams qualifying for the playoff matches on Sunday.
Next year, B.C. is scheduled to host both the U19 and U23 Western Canadian Softball Championships.
