Soccer tournament sidelined once again

Once a staple of the Labour Day weekend in 91原创, a long-running tournament will not run for a second straight year

For a second straight year, the 91原创 Labour Day Michael J. Smith Soccer Tournament has been given a red card.

, with organizers citing low registration as the primary factor in the decision.

It was pledged that the tournament would return in 2013.

And while both local soccer clubs 鈥  91原创 FC and 91原创 United Soccer Association (LUSA) 鈥 inquired about possibly hosting the event this year, neither formally submitted an application.

鈥淭he fields would have been available for either organization to run a tournament of some sort,鈥 said David Leavers, the Township鈥檚 director of parks and recreation, in an email to The Times.

鈥淗owever, we did suggest it would be bad form for either organization to refer to a tournament as 鈥榯he鈥 91原创 Labour Day tournament.

He did add the Township would like to see the return of a tournament to the Labour Day calendar.

The 2011 tournament featured 61 boys and girls soccer teams, about half as many as previous years.  At its peak, the tournament 鈥 which had run for 13 consecutive years 鈥 drew 240 teams.
