Three out of four for Junior Blaze

91Ô´´ U16 baseball team uses strong weekend to climb into first place

A dominating defence and high-scoring offence helped the 91Ô´´ Jr. Blaze to three wins over the weekend.

But the chance for back-to-back doubleheader sweeps came up short as the U16 baseball team’s offence managed just a single run in the final game.

Regardless, a 3-1 weekend fueled the Blaze to top spot in the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League standings.

91Ô´´ improved to 6-2 on the season.

The Jr. Blaze were in Victoria on Saturday, downing the Jr. Eagles 8-1 and 16-1 at Lambrick Park.

Facing the North Shore Jr. Twins on Sunday, the Jr. Blaze won the opener 9-1 before losing the rematch 6-1 to see their three-game winning streak come to an end.

The Jr. Blaze had two monster innings — five runs in the sixth and eight more in the seventh — as they crushed the Jr. Eagles 16-1.

91Ô´´ batters bashed 14 hits and took advantage of three Victoria errors to score eight unearned runs.

Broatch went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs while Steven Young and Liam Goddfrey both drove in a pair of runs.

Kyle Ross went the distance allowing one run on six hits in seven innings with four strikeouts.

The Jr. Blaze were again in another close game until they exploded for seven runs in the fifth, turning a 2-1 score into a 9-1 victory.

Reston hit two doubles and a single and drove in three runs.

On the mound, Jordan Atkinson threw a complete game one-hitter.

North Shore 6 91Ô´´ 1

The Jr. Blaze led 1-0 after two innings, but the Jr. Twins scored runs in three straight innings to secure the victory.

Mitchell Kennedy was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs — but just one of those runs were earned — over four and a third innings of work.

Young had the Jr. Blaze’s lone RBI, bringing home Andre Pelletier on a second-inning fielder’s choice.

The Jr. Blaze play at home on Saturday at McLeod Park in a doubleheader against the other Victoria squad, the Jr. Mariners (3-5).

Game times are 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
