TWU soccer: Spartans win Keg Spring Cup

91原创 soccer team uses free kick to break scoreless draw

Colleen Webber鈥檚 free kick goal late in the first half helped the Trinity Western Spartans capture the 2012 Keg Spring Cup in Victoria.

In Sunday鈥檚 final, Webber鈥檚 goal broke a scoreless tie as the Spartans defeated the Victoria Vikes 1-0 to win their second straight Keg Spring Cup title.

鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to be the Keg Cup winners,鈥 said coach Graham Roxburgh.

鈥淰ictoria was a very formidable opponent and were always very dangerous.

鈥淚 was really pleased with how we defended corporately and how we performed overall on offence as we generated decent (offensive) opportunities with a number of young players.鈥

He was especially impressed with the play of Natalie Boyd in the midfield and the team鈥檚 entire back four.

On the game鈥檚 only goal, Webber鈥檚 shot hit underneath the cross bar, bounced down and into the net.

鈥淐olleen hit an absolute bullet, which I don鈥檛 think any keeper would have been able to stop,鈥 Roxburgh said.

In the Spartans鈥 other game, they posted an impressive 3-0 win over the Alberta Pandas on Saturday.

Jessica King and Melissa Mobilio scored in the first half, while Rachel Antoniuk struck early in the second half.

Next up for the team is an exhibition match against the Vancouver Whitecaps prospects on April 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Rogers Park on the TWU campus.

The Spartans men鈥檚 team could not make it a clean sweep for the Trinity Western soccer program.

The Spartans fell 4-0 to the Fraser Valley Cascades in Sunday鈥檚 final at the Keg Spring Cup in Victoria.

鈥淓xtremely disappointed in our performance,鈥 said coach Pat Rohla.

鈥淲e played a workmanlike solid UFV team, but we gifted three goals to them.

鈥淥verall, it was an extremely poor performance that reminds us that nothing gets gifted, you must work for every ball and every result.鈥

The Cascades scored twice in each half, including an own goal from the Spartans.

Trent Mayer scored in the 28th minute, Daniel Molendijk struck in the 47th minute and Ethan Collins closed the scoring in the 90th minute.
