A six-year-old Aldergrove girl learned the tough realities of the fight against cancer after her grandma was diagnosed, and it got her thinking about young kids who are forced to battle the disease.
Chloe Davidson鈥檚 grandma, Norrie Belton, 66, underwent treatment for breast cancer from 2019 until December 2020. And grandma鈥檚 experience piqued Chloe鈥檚 curiosity.
鈥淚 had lost all my hair, so she had seen me without hair鈥 and I had a wig and she knew that,鈥 Belton recalled.
This prompted a conversation with mom Kara Davidson.
鈥淪o [Mom] had said to Chloe, 鈥榊ou know, there鈥檚 little kids that go through chemo and don鈥檛 have hair and they take donations for wigs for them,鈥欌 grandma retold of the exchange between mother and daughter.
And so Chloe set off to do her part.
鈥淚 wanted to donate because the kids who have cancer needed hair for wigs,鈥 Chloe said. 鈥淢y nana had cancer and she needed a wig. Nana was given a wig, so I thought why don鈥檛 I help other kids.鈥
With the help of her family Chloe organized an online with BC Children鈥檚 Hospital with the goal of raising $1,000 by Nov. 3, the day she was scheduled to cut and donate her hair to Wigs For Kids.
鈥淚 thought it was pretty amazing, that at that age, she could even be that sort of sympathetic to other people going through hair loss鈥 and she was so excited to get it cut,鈥 said Belton.
In a matter of weeks the fundraiser generated more than $3,000.
And so on Nov. 3 the Parkside Elementary student made her way to the salon chair for the long awaited haircut.
Immediately after jumping out of the chair Chole felt much lighter.
鈥淚t was hard washing and brushing my hair on my own,鈥 she recalled about the experience. 鈥淣ow I can brush my own hair without my mom鈥檚 help.鈥
Grandma laughed when she recounted Chole鈥檚 first words after her new hairdo was revealed.
鈥淢y dad鈥檚 gonna freak. He wanted me to keep it to my shoulders.鈥
Chole was donating 10 inches of her hair and that meant cutting it slightly above her shoulders, and she didn鈥檛 mind one bit.
鈥淚t felt good,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 sad because I鈥檓 making another kid happy.鈥
Mom said Chloe is ready to make the commitment to growing her hair out again.
鈥淐hloe wanted to thank her family and friends who donated in her name. She was happy to have all their 鈥榲otes.鈥 Every time I told her she received a new donation she would call them her votes,鈥 Davidson said.
