Expect Aug. 9 to be very colourful day at the 91Ô´´ Senior Resources Society centre as it celebrates Pride with a day of activities and entertainment.

The Pride Day festivities that Saturday are a joint effort between the seniors centre, the Silver Pride support group, and the 91Ô´´ Pride Society.

"We are so excited to be working towards 91Ô´´ Pride Day on Aug. 9 this year!," said board member Oliver Day.

The day starts with an all-ages free event at the centre, 20605 51B Ave. From 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., there's a flag raising ceremony, an artists' market, guest speakers, dance performances, a film screening, 50/50, and facepainting. The centre's cafe is open throughout. Entertainer Scarlet Rosé will be doing drag bingo.

New this year is an evening of entertainment. Soulful Guitarist Ernestine performs starting at 5:30 p.m. There's a drag show from 6:15 to 7 p.m. followed by Queer as Funk from 7 to 7:45 p.m. and the Undercover Band starting at 8 p.m.

The day will be very exuberant, but there's a reason behind the fun – to increase awareness.

"Our vision is to create a community where 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals can be their authentic selves and inspire people of all backgrounds to stand in solidarity so that future generations inherit a world of boundless acceptance," Day said.

People do not need to be seniors nor members of the seniors centre to attend. The daytime event is open to all and has free admission. The evening event is 19 and older as there is a cash bar and requires tickets which are available through . Tickets cost $27.96 (including fees).

Pride Day is part of an effort by the Pride society to host more events.

"This last year we've been doing regular events, engaging more with the community, and making connections with other organizations," Day explained.
