No wrap job this Christmas will be too big or too small 鈥� or too sloppy 鈥� for volunteer wrappers at Willowbrook Shopping Centre.
While it goes against the grain for the elves supporting the 91原创 School District Foundation (LSDF) to do anything but the finest job possible, one mother wanted 鈥渁ll her presents wrapped really sloppily, so that it wouldn鈥檛 look like they came from her,鈥� said head elf 鈥� and LSDF executive director 鈥� Susan Cairns.
鈥淚t was hard for me to convince the wrappers to do it,鈥� said Cairns, 鈥渂ecause you want to make them all nice and crisp and professionally done. But she was insistent that we wrap sloppily, so I had to convince them, and they did.鈥�
There have been wrap-jobs that presented challenges on a whole other level, like the year the foundation elves were asked to wrap a 鈥済reat big painting.鈥�
Cairns estimates that it was about 20 feet by 40 feet. But they accomplished the feat.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a really fun way to get the spirit of Christmas,鈥� said Cairns, who has 鈥� some years 鈥� been at the wrapping station all day on Dec. 24, which is always the busiest day.
鈥淚 love it,鈥� she said. 鈥淎nd I bring my whole family down. They come and it鈥檚 part of our family tradition.鈥�
The whole foundation board will be at the wrapping station, in the mall across from the Willowbrook鈥檚 Starbucks, on Dec. 23.
The LSDF has been operating wrapping stations at Willowbrook since 2010. Wrapping 鈥渟tarts at $3 and it goes up to $12, if you want to get a big coat or something like that wrapped,鈥� said Cairns.
鈥淎ll our paper is eco-friendly, and the ribbons, and the gift cards 鈥� everything is,鈥� she elaborated.
A selection of wraps is laid out on the table, and some come in with their own special wrapping paper. A job can be ready in about 10 minutes, 鈥渁nd if it鈥檚 really, really busy; just come back in half an hour and it will be done.鈥�
The service is all-inclusive, not just for gifts bought at the mall. 鈥淵ou can bring your gifts in from anywhere to have them wrapped,鈥� Cairns clarified.
They鈥檒l even prepare gifts for mailing: 鈥淲e鈥檒l wrap it and put it into brown paper so they can just take it down to the post office.
鈥淭here鈥檚 also a coat check 鈥� for more than just coats.
鈥淚f you want to leave not only your coat, but all your presents that you鈥檝e had wrapped, and you want to go shop some more,鈥� said Cairns, 鈥渨e鈥檒l take care of it for you, and that鈥檚 only $2.鈥�
All of the money raised 鈥� about $18,000 last year 鈥� goes to the foundation for its meal programs or its homelessness initiatives 鈥� for a whole range of activities.
鈥淚t鈥檚 for everything that the foundation does to support the 91原创 School District,鈥� said Cairns.
Volunteers can earmark their take for specific programs for 91原创 School District students.
鈥淭hey could be teachers who want to raise money for certain programs, or it could be PACs that want to raise money,鈥� she said.
