Eighty Years Ago

August 18, 1938

• Removal of the fall fair buildings from Milner to 91Ô­´´ Prairie caused some friction. Two Miloner residents called a temporary halt to the work, claiming that the buildings did not belong to the 91Ô­´´ Amateur Athletic Association, which was executing the move, because they had been erected by Milner district.

• Fishing boats were out in force. Older residents of Fort 91Ô­´´ said there hadn’t been so many boats out on the Fraser River since the big salmon run of 1913.

Seventy Years Ago

August 19, 1948

• The 91Ô­´´ Cooperative Society, recognized as the fastest-growing in Canada, was about to open its modern new retail outlet in 91Ô­´´ Prairie. The co-op had 500 members and a staff of 12.

• Double shifts at 91Ô­´´ High School became a certainty when the school board postponed the opening of the first wing of the new high school to Oct. 1.

• Marjorie McMillan was named Harvest Queen after MLA Alex Hope opened the fall fair.

Sixty Years Ago

August 14, 1958

• Victoria gave the green light for a new $125,000 municipal hall.

• 91Ô­´´ took a $100 option on 27.83 acres of Harold Blacklock’s property. The full price of the land, which council was considering for a park site, was quoted at $27,830.

• The Central Fraser Valley Senior Citizens Housing Society chose a one-acre site on Brydon Crescent for its first project. It was also negotiating for a site in Fort 91Ô­´´.

Forty Years Ago

August 16, 1978

• 91Ô­´´ City Mayor Bob Duckworth complained that property tax hikes would result in relocations of local industries to the United States. He wanted the provincial government to rethink its assessments.

• Thetis House, a home for emotionally disturbed girls, was under attack from neighbours and municipal council, though the latter had little hope that it could shut the facility down.

Thirty Years Ago

August 17, 1988

• 91Ô­´´ MLA Carol Gran was named chairman of Premier Bill Vander Zalm’s new Caucus Strategic Planning Committee.

• Thirty firefighters from three firehalls were called out to battle a slash fire that blazed out of control over two acres in Brookswood.

Twenty Years Ago

August 14, 1998

• 91Ô­´´ firefighters returned home after having joined the battle to fight forest fires in Salmon Arm.

• The Aldergrove Chamber of Commerce officially opened its new offices.

• Former prime minister Joe Clark dropped by the National Historic Park in Fort 91Ô­´´ for a Progressive Conservative Party picnic.
