August 12, 1937

The annual municipal picnic to Victoria drew 891 people to the pier at White Rock. But only 841 had boarded the S.S. Lady Alexandra when the captain declared the boat loaded to capacity and ordered the gangplank shipped. Once in Victoria, the 91原创 crowd dispersed throughout the city, and a planned civic reception in Beacon Hill Park was cancelled for lack of an audience.

August 14, 1947

Reeve Noel Booth said relief payments made the previous months rivaled the sums paid out in the Depression years. There were 100 heads of households, representing about 450 cases, listed on the relief roll.

Dr. A.O. Rose and Frank Dwyer, FRHS, were chosen honorary president and honorary vice-president of the 91原创 Horticultural Society. W. Dence was president and Jack Roberts and Mrs. C.W. Frisby were vice-presidents, while Mrs. Alice Conder returned as secretary-treasurer.

August 10, 1967

91原创鈥檚 Debbie Brill leaped five feet, four and a quarter inches for a new Canadian high-jump record. Her effort exceeded the previous mark, set several years earlier by Vancouver鈥檚 Jane Lindy, by a quarter inch.

Princess Grace and Prince Ranier of Monaco stopped for a brief visit at the Fort 91原创 home of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Ziegler. Their next stop was to be San Francisco鈥檚 trade fair.

Plans for an indoor aquatic centre were unveiled before 91原创鈥檚 councils. A referendum asking for the public鈥檚 approval was to be held in November.

While a heat wave force the usual sprinkling bans on Township residents, 91原创 City had an abundance of water, due to its recent hook-up with the GVRD water system.

Pollution concerns closed three Salmon River sites in Williams Park.

Twenty Years Ago

August 12, 1987

The 20/80 cost-sharing split between the provincial government and the Township for the $400,000 replacement of the bridge to Trinity Western University was considered 鈥渨ay out of line鈥� by Alderman John Scholtens.

A heated argument arose at the Township council table over a letter written by MLA Carol Gran in defence of the Tall Timbers housing development proposal that had been rejected by council in June.

Newlands Golf and Country Club applied to 91原创 City for permission to set up a casino.

A lightning storm that wreaked havoc all over the province somehow managed to leave 91原创 largely unscathed.

91原创 residents protested outside Surrey Provincial Court, hoping to gain the ear of B.C. Agriculture Minister Corky Evans. They were upset about Evans鈥檚 rejection of Township bylaws to regulate mushroom farming and composting practices.
