A 41-year-old 91原创 man is charged with theft and possessing stolen property related to a report of a car parked outside a New Westminster store Friday, Aug. 25, and being used to flee with merchandise from the store.

At about 8 a.m. that day, patrol officers responded to a call from someone who believed they had just seen their friend鈥檚 stolen car being driven through New Westminster.

When officers located the vehicle parked outside a local store they witnessed a man running from the store carrying suspected stolen property with a security guard running after him. A suspect got into the vehicle and fled.

The New West Police street crime unit, in unmarked vehicles, was able to follow the vehicle into Vancouver where it was stopped and a male taken into custody by the Vancouver Police dog unit, but not before the suspect rammed a New West police vehicle, causing minor damage and no injuries.

鈥淒ealing with mobile stolen vehicles can be a high-risk venture for police as we want to avoid dangerous pursuits that can put the public at risk,鈥 said New West deputy chief Const. Paul Hyland. 鈥淲e have had a few of these incidents recently, and I am grateful for the work being done by our members to ensure they are being resolved in a safe manner.鈥

The New West police also expressed its gratitude for the help of the VDP as well as the person who initially called 911 to report the sighting.

Mathew Christopher Nicholl is charged with one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000, one count of theft under $5,000, and one count of breach of release order (failure to appear as required).
