A young driver could have his licence suspended after BC Transit Police caught him zipping across the Golden Ears Bridge at 176 km/h recently.
The incident took place just after 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, when the 19-year-old novice driver was pulled over in the 70 km/h zone on the bridge, by officers with the Targeted Mobile Enforcement Team (TMET).
The driver, a Surrey man, saw the 2022 Toyota Corolla impounded for seven days and was handed a $483 ticket. The driver was also ticketed for failing to display an N sticker on the car, for another $109.
The registered owner of the car was also notified, said Const. Amanda Steed of the BC Transit Police.
As he’s a young driver, he could lose his licence for a few months.
Drivers who are still operating under the graduated licensing program have far less leeway when it comes to accumulating points against their licence.
According to ICBC, excessive speeding violations, like this one, mean three points on a licence. Drivers with an N can see their licences suspended for as little as two or three points worth of violations.
The BC Transit Police were on watch for speeders on the bridge as part of TMET’s targeted enforcement, said Steed.
Golden Ears Bridge is owned by TransLink, so it’s one of the areas they target. The BC Transit Police also tend to do targeted campaigns around other transit infrastructure, such as near park and rides and bus and SkyTrain stations. They do fare enforcement on SkyTrain and SeaBus as well.

A "N" driver must have thought he was driving in the Indy 500. He was caught doing 176 km/h in a 70km/h zone. Doing 106km/h over the limit on the Golden Ear Bridge earned the driver $483 fine and a 7 day vehicle impoundment.
