Editorial — Steps in right direction on safety at 91Ô´´ City bus exchange

More lighting will be a good thing, but there needs to be surveillance cameras as well.

Thanks to 91Ô´´ City and TransLink for stepping up to the plate and at the 91Ô´´ City bus exchange.

Funds have been approved and materials are being ordered, and there should be better lighting there by February or March. This is a step in the right direction.

Much more needs to be done to improve safety there, starting with video surveillance cameras. Both agencies have their hands tied by privacy regulations, so it’s time for public pressure on MLA Mary Polak. She needs to be asked why privacy is allowed to override safety at the bus exchange.

It is perfectly acceptable and legal for private property owners to mount surveillance cameras to document property crimes. 91Ô´´ RCMP are using the images they capture on a daily basis. Yet somehow, it is unacceptable to use such cameras at high-risk public locations, where people are attacked, beaten and robbed.

This is wrong, and it needs to change.
