Editor: Our North American society is heavily trenched in the idea that we as a people must always be busy. Whether it鈥檚 work, school, sports, or chores, people are always doing something, leaving very little time to relax, pursue hobbies, or accomplish personal goals.
However, 2016 is the year of extra time! Due to the gravitational effects which our moon has on our earth, the planet鈥檚 rotation is very slightly altered, therefore creating a discrepancy between our time and the rest of the solar system. In order to compensate for this, additional time may be added each year, depending on how out of sync Earth is.
This year, our planet is a whopping one second out of sync and while there is so much that can be done with one extra second, the question still remains: what do we do with it? This year, I have competed with a team, Organized Mayhem Loves Dragonfruit, in a competition known as GISHWHES (The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen).
This scavenger hunt has a variety of tasks, some strange and out of the ordinary, while others are acts of kindness large and small. GISHWHES has shown me how even the smallest things can bring a smile to another person鈥檚 face, and because of this, I have decided to dedicate my extra second to do some kind of random act of kindness for someone in my community.
What that act is, I have yet to decide. How will you spend your extra second?
