Trevor Moreno was explaining what he likes about serving as president of North 91原创 Softball on Saturday, April 5, the day the non-profit youth league launched its new season at Yorkson Community Park.
"I'm blessed that I'm surrounded by such a great group of volunteers that make my role so much easier," Moreno told the 91原创 Advance Times.
Township Mayor Eric Woodward spoke at the event.
Moreno said Woodward gave a "91原创enal" speech about improving sporting facilities in the community, Moreno reported.
"Doesn't matter if its softball, football, rugby, ball hockey whatever, [he's] doing his best to make sure the facilities are available in the Township," Moreno said.
Moreno praised the Township for creating new ball diamonds by taking "precious plots of grass that are around, that are attached to community schools, and turning them into softball fields."
Extra space is needed, with growing numbers of players, he said.
"This is the largest registration that we've had in my 17 years [as president]," Moreno estimated.
"We had over 600 kids that were out today [1,500 overall]."
"Our biggest increases are coming from our U7 and our U9 divisions. We're at 238 kids [there],so our young kids program has exploded. I think we run a really great program in here in North 91原创," Moreno said.
It takes a lot of effort and coordination to pull off something as big as the season opener, Moreno explained.
"We play out of five separate community parks, which can be challenging, because we have our equipment room at Walnut Grove Community Park. We have to really rely on volunteers to pull off the event that we did today."
"You have 12 to 15 trucks, and have to go back and forth, bringing tables and barbecues and equipment and tents and all that sort of stuff."
