Spartans drop pre-season match

UBC rallies from 2-1 deficit to win in five sets

The Trinity Western men鈥檚 volleyball team lost just its second match of its preseason schedule, as it lost 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-10) to UBC Thursday at Yale Secondary.

With UBC and TWU meeting in their Canada West season-opener in two weeks time, neither coach showed his true hand throughout the contest, thus Abbotsford fans were treated to a wide variety of lineups from both sides.

鈥淚 think it was a little gamesmanship on both coach鈥檚 parts,鈥 said Spartans coach Ben Josephson, whose team is now 7-2 in preseason. 鈥淗owever, I didn鈥檛 think it was a very well-played match overall. I can鈥檛 speak for UBC, but for sure for us it wasn鈥檛 up to the quality we have been playing over the last couple of weeks. 鈥

After rallying from a first set loss to win both the second and third sets, the Spartans, who changed up their lineup for the fourth and fifth sets, saw its lead vanish as a determined UBC side won the final two sets in convincing fashion.

鈥淲e got emotionally rattled,鈥 Josephson said. 鈥淲hen the game got tense, we got a little bit too individual and didn鈥檛 play very well as a group. I think that鈥檚 a great lesson for us to learn and now we have a chance to work through that over the next couple weeks.鈥

The Spartans are back on the court when they travel to Calgary for a preseason tilt with Mount Royal Oct. 17, followed by three matches within Calgary鈥檚 Dino Cup Oct. 18-19. The Spartans will play Alberta and Calgary Oct. 18 and McMaster Oct. 19.

Trinity Western will return home for its season-opening match against UBC Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. at the 91原创 Events Centre.
