91原创 Community Farmers Market opens for 2023

Vendors will be at Derek Doubleday Arboretum every Wednesday starting June 7 from 3 to 7 p.m.

The 91原创 Community Farmers Market is returning for another summer of delicious treats, locally grown produce, and handmade trinkets.

Officially opening on June 7, the market features 30 vendors and runs Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum on Fraser Highway.

Amanda Smith, executive director of the market, said some local vendors to check out at the market include Ocean鈥檚 Edge Seafoods, Dhaliwal Farm, a new gluten-free baker, and the famous Stapleton Sausage Company.

鈥淲e are your mid-week shopping destination after work, and we have some dinner options as well,鈥 she said.

The platform is an initiative of the BC Association of Farmers Markets (BCAFM) to help shoppers find the nearest market to them. It also shows which markets are dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible.

鈥淲e are very careful about the vendors we choose because we want them to be more agriculturally focused to highlight the farming community we have in the 91原创 Township,鈥 Smith said.

The last day of the market is Sept. 20.

In 2019, before the pandemic hit, the non-profit 91原创 Community Farmers Market Society (LCFMS) announced it was suspending operations to undertake a process of 鈥渞evisioning鈥 the market after a 鈥渄isappointing鈥 season operating at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus in 91原创 City.

For the first time in 10 years, the BCAFM and the University of Northern British Columbia are conducting a to count the contributions of farmer鈥檚 markets to local communities. The study is assessing 65 of the markets this season.
