A year after a man was killed in Willoughby, charges have been laid against another accused in his killing.
On Aug. 2, 2024, at 12:46 a.m., 91原创 RCMP responded to a report of gun shots in the 7000-block of 202B Street.
Two men suffering from gun shot wounds were subsequently located at the hospital. One of the men succumbed to his injuries and the second was released from hospital.
To further the investigation, IHIT identified the victim as 41-year-old Dillan Unger of 91原创, said Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi, IHIT media relations.
Throughout the course of this investigation, IHIT has worked with the 91原创 RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) to identify a suspect, understand the circumstances around the homicide and recommend charges.
On July 31, the BC Prosecution Service charged Stephen George Johnson with second-degree murder in relation to the homicide.
Additionally, in relation to the August 2024 incident, Johnson was charged with:
鈥 four counts of attempted murder,
鈥 one count of aggravated assault,
鈥 one count of using a firearm in the commission of an offence, and
鈥 one count of reckless discharge of a firearm.
Investigators can confirm that Unger and Johnson were known to each other.
鈥淥ver the past year, investigators have remained committed to advancing this investigation and securing charges in this case,鈥 Dhesi said. 鈥淚HIT would like to thank the 91原创 RCMP and IFIS for their support throughout the investigation.鈥
Johnson remains in custody. As this matter is now before the courts, IHIT will not provide additional information, she added.
Johnson also appears to be before the courts for a number of gun charges. Stephen George Johnson was charged in Surrey with possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon with ammo, possessing a firearm with an altered serial number, and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. According to the Court Services Online website (CSO), those charges are linked to a May 16 incident, and Johnson was charged in September.
A trial is scheduled for Oct. 1 related to the gun charges.
Previous 91原创 Advance Times coverage outlines Unger's known history.
Unger appears to have been a longtime 91原创 resident who had a few run-ins with the law when he was a young man.
After that, court records do not show Unger appearing before a judge in B.C. for almost 20 years.
In May of 2023, he was charged with theft under $5,000. That case was still before the courts when he died.
