Letter: Townhouse tax increase of 63 per cent ‘an almost criminal money grab’

Editor: I read with interest the article, “Housing assessments through the roof,” (the  Times, Jan. 6).

It’s interesting that North 91ԭ (specifically Walnut Grove) 2016 property assessment increases are at 39 per cent over 2015.

I’m assuming that relates to single family homes, and the Township says those close to the average won’t see a huge increase in property taxes.

I live in an adult town home complex in Walnut Grove, and our assessments jumped 63 per cent, from $450,000 to $735,000.

Two or three homes in our 147-unit complex sold for completely outrageous amounts creating ridiculous assessments.

Most others sold for a few hundred thousand less than the $700,000.

Our 24-year old 1,600 square foot town homes are in no way equivalent to those 3,000 square foot single family homes with huge yards, but the assessments are only within $100,000 of each other.

Homes that were bought and sold (flipped) within a year should be removed from the calculation and those people who profited should be the ones paying, not a complex of elderly people, barely surviving on pensions.

Our property taxes are already way too high.

We maintain all services within our grounds, all roads, and infrastructure are not maintained by the Township, but yet we will pay a hell of a lot more than most.

A 63 per cent assessment increase is very inaccurate and creates an almost criminal money grab for the Township.

M. McRae,

Walnut Grove
